What is it?

It occurred to me earlier that I don't actually know what genre my MS falls under.  Maybe I'm being a bit dense, but although I think I know, I'm not certain.
I know it's a YA contemporary adventure, but the characters have special powers, like invisibility.  Does this make it fantasy as well?

  1. Lol, I had an issue with this too! My characters have powers too and there is a ton of action too. But since the powers play a pretty big part in the story, I categorized it as a fantasy.

  2. I'm having the same problem with mine. I'm writing a women's fiction leaning towards contemporary romance, but it's not genre fiction, I don't think.
I think Cassie's right. Yours has fantasy elements, so I'd lean that way. Fantasy adventure is a good combo. But the best way to know is to have another writer read it and ask their opinion.

Emily - Good plan. I'll give that a try once I've finished diting :o)

  6. Yeah, I'd say it falls into the fantasy genre. Just cause it's in a contemporary setting, it's still fantasy. Action/fantasy! :) (my best guess, anyway.)

  7. Have you seen the Genre Map over at Book Country? Sometimes that helps. Oh! Or you could check out some of the blog posts floating around on the subject. Good luck! :)

  8. I think that's considered urban fantasy or if there is a science base for the powers then it would be a sci fi.

  9. Super powers definitely sounds like fantasy to me.

  10. Abby - action/fantasy with an '/' in the middle suddenly makes it look right :o)

Carrie - Thanks, I'll check those out

Erin - One of the powers was caused by a science experiment, and it can be explained scientifically. Does that now make it Contemporary/Urban/Fantasy/Sci-fi?

Karen - The general concensus seems to be Fantasy. I will probably stick with that until the agencies tell me otherwise. lol
